The major thing to decide is the size of the island you are looking for in your kitchen. This is primarily governed by the size of your kitchen. As a rule keep a minimum clearance of 24 inches (60 cms) around the movable island for working and movement. For fixed islands consider having 36 inches (75 cms) all around.
