If you are having a hard time being creative, you are not alone. There are “good days” for creative people, and then there are “not so good days” for the creative people.

By good days I mean, when ideas are flowing in, you have more design ideas than you actually require. Your brain is all charged up. Basically, life is good. But then, there are not so good design days too. The days when there is a shortage of ideas, and you are struggling to come up with a single design. You end up sitting at the desk for hours at a stretch, but nothing works. You are having difficulty to please you, client or boss.

Yes, we all have been through it. It’s part of a designer’s life, right? But what can you do to overcome the drained and anxious feeling you have on “not so good” design days? How can you be more creative and come up with decent ideas?

1.    Relax:

Sit back and relax for some time. Acknowledge that such days happen to all. Deep breathing works when the frustration of not achieving results overpowers you, this will instantly calm your mind and make you in control of the situation. In fact, try taking a shower if possible, to put you in a relaxed state faster. Listen to some music to relax. And as we all would agree, a relaxed mind can function faster and more efficiently.

“Everyone who’s ever taken a shower has had an idea. It’s the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference.”

– Nolan Bushnell

2.    Take a walk:

A walk can be the most efficient way to clear your mind from all the frustration and thoughts that may be blocking the flow of ideas in you. For me, this works well. Whether I’m at my office or home office, taking a walk just refreshes me. The idea is to change the current environment that you are in. In effect, I somehow tend to start thinking more clearly about the given problem. Sometimes, a simple slow walk works wonders for me to see the problem from an entirely new angle and thus help in generating more diverse ideas.

3.    Feel free:

We all know creative people or designers can maximize their potential only if they are let free. So, while creating for yourself or someone else, let go of all the apprehensions that you may be having about pitching the idea/ its execution/future. Don’t be intimidated by the restrictions like the project cost, client preferences. All that can be worked out and managed later also. Just feel free to think and brainstorm. Be open to all the ideas that spark your brain. You never know which spark might just start the fire of a brilliant idea.

“To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” – Joseph Chilton Pierce

4.    Find Inspiration:

The world works on inspiration. And a designer’s world is no different. In today’s world inspiration is at the click of our fingers. The internet is full of images and thoughts to inspire you. So why not make the most of it? Looking at some related works can indeed click an idea in your mind.

As for me, I create a mood board for every project in hand. Seeing all the inspiration at one places triggers the brain to think more creatively.

5.    Daydream:

Daydreaming is known to increase the creativity levels. This process fuels the brain, giving it a break from the ardent task. Daydreaming about blissful things induces happy hormones and feel good factor in our minds which aids in the creative process.

No wonder I do it a lot. Sitting next to a window makes my mind wander, but when I do come back, I feel refreshed and pumped up to pull off the task in hand.

6.    Munch or drink

A dehydrated brain certainly can’t produce many ideas. Drink some water, have a cup of coffee or chew gum, this will divert and relax your mind for the moment.

7.    Doodling or Random Writing

The doodling and random writing are an indication towards the idea within your brain which you are unable to manifest physically. I end to doodle and scribble randomly on a piece of paper. And I have occasionally come up with new ideas just by seeing those random designs I made. So start doodling!

Although this is not a definitive guide but the tips I shared will certainly lead you towards being more creative and generate more ideas, it’s one creative mind’s tips to another. In the end, I would like to say that you need to enjoy what you are doing. That is how creativity surges.
